Set Up Your Google Business Profile in 30 Minutes
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important thing for local search. When someone Googles "plumber near me" or "dentist in 95630," Google shows Business Profiles before websites. If you don't have one, you're invisible. If you have one but it's half-filled, you're losing to competitors who filled theirs out. This guide gets you from zero to fully optimized in one sitting.
Claim or Create Your Listing
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account (create one if you don't have one).
Search for your business name. If it appears, click "Claim this business" and follow the verification steps. If it doesn't appear, click "Add your business" and enter your information.
Verification: Google will verify you're the real owner. The fastest method is phone verification (instant). If that's not available, they'll mail a postcard with a code (5-7 business days). Don't skip verification — unverified listings don't appear in search results.
Fill Out Every Field
Incomplete profiles rank lower. Google rewards profiles that are 100% filled out. Go through each section:
- ✓ Business name — Use your real business name. Don't stuff keywords ("Joe's Plumbing - Best Plumber in Sacramento" will get you penalized).
- ✓ Primary category — Pick the most specific category. "Plumber" is better than "Home Services." See trade-specific tips below.
- ✓ Secondary categories — Add 2-3 more. A plumber might add "Water Heater Installation," "Drain Cleaning," "Gas Line Installation."
- ✓ Address — Your physical location. If you serve customers at their location, check "I deliver goods and services to my customers" and set a service area instead.
- ✓ Phone number — Use your main business line. Must match what's on your website.
- ✓ Website — Link to your Gravel website.
- ✓ Hours — Set your real hours. Include special hours for holidays.
- ✓ Business description — 750 characters max. Describe what you do, where you serve, and what makes you different. No phone numbers or URLs in the description.
Add Photos
Listings with photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks (Google's data). Upload at least:
- ✓ Logo — Your business logo (square, 250x250px minimum)
- ✓ Cover photo — Your best work or storefront (landscape, 1024x576px)
- ✓ 3-5 work photos — Completed projects, your crew in action, your shop/office
- ✓ Team photo — Customers want to see who they're hiring
Use real photos, not stock photos. Customers can tell the difference. Phone photos are fine — authenticity beats perfection.
Add Services
Go to the "Services" section and add every service you offer with a description and price (optional but recommended). This helps Google match you to specific searches like "water heater installation near me."
Be specific. "Plumbing Repair" is too vague. "Garbage Disposal Repair" and "Slab Leak Detection" are specific searches people actually type into Google.
Get Your First 10 Reviews
Reviews are the #1 ranking factor for local search. You need at least 10 to be competitive. Here's how to get them:
- ✓ Ask in person — After completing a job, say: "If you're happy with the work, a Google review would really help us out." Hand them your phone with the review screen open.
- ✓ Text a link — Google gives you a short review link. Go to your GBP dashboard, click "Get more reviews," copy the link, and text it to your last 10 customers.
- ✓ Add it to your invoice — Include the review link on your invoices with: "Enjoyed our work? Leave a review: [link]"
- ✓ Respond to every review — Thank the 5-star reviews ("Thanks, Mike! Glad we could help with the kitchen faucet."). Address negative reviews professionally and offer to make it right.
Never buy fake reviews or offer incentives for reviews. Google detects this and will penalize or suspend your listing.
Post Updates
Google Business Profiles have a "Posts" feature — like social media for your listing. Post once a week:
- ✓ Completed project photos with a short description
- ✓ Seasonal offers ("Winter special: furnace tune-up $89")
- ✓ Tips and advice ("3 signs your water heater needs replacement")
Posts expire after 7 days, so consistency matters. Even a quick phone photo with one sentence is better than nothing.
